SRI LANKA – OUR ITINERARY GUIDE FOR A 2-WEEKS TRIP

We spent three weeks in Sri Lanka and soon fell in love with this gorgeous country: very backpacker friendly, it’s amazing to travel by train and local bus to get to know their culture. Two major disasters have hit Sri Lanka recently: the civil war between the Tamil rebels and the government forces, especially in the north of the country, ended in 2009; and the devastating tsunami of 2004 that destroyed many villages on the eastern and southern coasts. Sri Lanka has risen again since then, making tourism its n.1 income. As of today, it is still relatively untouched in some areas, but is becoming quickly a top destination for…

SRI LANKA COAST TO COAST: TRINCOMALEE TO NEGOMBO

After visiting the central regions of Sri Lanka, now it’s time for us to relax on the east coast beaches around Trincomalee, and later move to the west coast up to Negombo, crossing the whole country in its width. We leave Habarana in the morning and we hardly find a seat on the overcrowded bus to Trincomalee, city on the east coast of Sri Lanka. A couple of hours are enough to drive through the 88 km, accompanied by loud local music, trying not to get stuck to the plastic seats (which glue to our sweaty skins). TRINCOMALEE Trincomalee looks like any other Sri Lankan big city we’ve seen so…

KANDY, SIGIRIYA AND KAUDULLA PARK: THE HEART OF SRI LANKA

Our quick stopover in Kandy before moving to Dambulla where we leave from to visit one of the most popular sites in Sri Lanka: Sigiriya. From here we keep heading north, stopping in Habarana, base for the safari at the Kaudulla National Park, home of the elephants. Kandy Our first impression of Kandy is not the best one: the jam we’ve avoided so far hits us, together with chaos, noises and smells. A tuk tuk takes us to our guesthouse, squeezing through the traffic and going uphill. The stay is far from the city disorder and faces the mountains. At the beginning we consider staying in Kandy for 2 nights,…

A GEM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHLANDS: ELLA

Ella is a small village in the middle of Sri Lankan Highlands. It was and still is an important road junction before becoming a touristic centre. There’s not really much to do and see in the village itself, as a matter of fact all the main attractions are scattered some km away. Being located right in the middle of all of them, and being reachable from 3 directions, makes Ella a perfect place to use as a base to visit its surroundings. DAY 1 The town is packed with accommodations and facilities for foreigners, there are probably more tourists than locals here. We find a nice house owned by a…

SOUTHERN SRI LANKA: GALLE, MIRISSA, TISSA

Here we are in a new country to us: Sri Lanka! Our first destination is the southern province, where we will stop at coastal cities of Galle, Mirissa and slightly on the inside Tissa, for Yala National Park. We land at Colombo Bandaranaike Airport at 5am. A couple of hours to get through immigration, get our 30-day visa to Sri Lanka,  change some money, and we are ready to proceed. Staying in Colombo is not in our plans, at least not now, maybe further on before leaving the country. We find a sort of bus stand, more of a dusty courtyard, where we hop on the first of many buses…

    NEXT DESTINATION: SRI LANKA!

Sri Lanka is our next Country on the list. Here’s a brief update on our upcoming movements! As we plan to head eastwards again, we want to discover other countries from the previous already visited. We are always thirsty for new adventures and new cultures, that’s why the best destination for us is the one we haven’t been to yet! Sri Lanka is a not too small island, actually quite big in kms, but looks tiny compared to massive India just on top of it. In fact it is also known as The Teardrop of India, whereas in the past it used to be called Ceylon. A name that is…
